HOW IT HAPPENED
King was able to build an 11-5 lead early in set one, but a kill from Tepedino followed by an error by the Tornado allowed the Valkyries to pull within 11-7. However, a 9-5 spurt by KU pushed the lead out to its largest of the frame, 20-12.
From that point the two teams traded the final 10 points and King took a 1-0 match lead after winning set one, 25-17.
Set two was fairly even as King built a small lead but could not pull away from the Valkyries early. However, with the score at 12-10 in favor of the Tornado, King went on a decisive 7-1 run to jump ahead 19-11 late.
Converse made a bit of a push, but it was not enough as King took set two, 25-19, controlling the match at 2-0.
Once again, King got off to a fast start, taking 10 of the first 16 points of set three. A block by Jasmine Finkley and Tepedino narrowed the deficit to 10-7, but an 8-1 burst by KU gave the Tornado a comfortable double-digit lead at 18-8.
Converse collected kills from Elizabeth Coffey and Pitts, as well as a ball handling error by King, to pull within 18-11, but the Tornado did not let CC get any closer, closing out the set, 25-14, and the match, 3-0.
The Valkyries will conclude its six-game road trip on Wednesday, November 6, traveling to face the Trojans of Mount Olive. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
