Team Effort Leads Valkyries to Season Sweep of Chowan

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse College volleyball team completed the series sweep of Chowan University with an all-around dominant performance on Friday evening inside Hannah Gymnasium. Not only did the Valkyries earn two wins over the Hawks, Converse also took all six sets on the season.

MATCH INFORMATION

SCORE: Chowan 0, Converse 3 (26-24, 25-16, 25-15)

RECORDS: Chowan (3-11, 1-7 CC), Converse (7-15, 4-4 CC)

LOCATION: Hannah Gymnasium, Converse College, Spartanburg, S.C.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Set One

Chowan raced out an early 4-1 lead, but Converse came storming back to knot the opening set at 6-all following a kill by Pitts. After the two teams traded the next eight points, Converse collected back-to-back kills from Elizabeth Coffey and Jasmine Finkley to take the slim 12-10 lead.

However, the Hawks capitalized on Converse miscues, taking a 19-16 lead late in the frame. Chowan looked poised to take the first set after going up 24-22, but a service error ignited a 4-0 run by the Vals to end the set and give CC the 1-0 match lead.

Set Two

The early part of set two was fairly competitive as neither team could build much of a lead. However, with the score at 12-11 in favor of the Purple and Gold, Converse ripped off four of five points, earning an 18-12 advantage late.

Chowan tallied three in a row to close the gap to three (18-15), but that was as close as the set would get as Converse, behind the spectacular serving of Sara Grace Westmoreland, took a commanding 2-0 match lead after taking the frame 25-16.

Set Three

An attack error by Converse allowed the Hawks to knot the score at 10-all in the pivotal third set, but a kill by Lottie Hutson followed by consecutive kills from Pitts helped the Vals establish a 13-10 lead.

Hannah Sladick collected a kill to trim the deficit to 13-11, but Converse took complete control with five straight points and seven of eight. Chowan was able to pull to within 20-14, but the attack game of the Valkyries coupled with Westmoreland's mastery at the service line propelled Converse to the 25-15 set win and 3-0 match win.

The Valkyries will make the quick turnaround, playing host to Barton College tomorrow afternoon at 2p.m. Converse defeated the Bulldogs in a dramatic five-set thriller just two weeks ago.
