Valkyries Fall in Battle Against Emmanuel, 3-2

FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga.- Valkyries battled to send it to a decisive fifth set against Emmanuel in Conference Carolinas action on Saturday afternoon, but fell 3-2 (25-17, 15-15, 19-25, 27-25, 12-15).  Converse falls to 5-10 on the season and 0-4 in conference play.  Emmanuel moves to 7-6 and 2-1 in league play.

Katie Butler (Savannah, Ga.) led the team with 15 kills on the afternoon.  Journee English (Columbia, S.C.) tallied 10 kills with Samantha Haynes (Chesnee, S.C.) racked up nine kills.  Candace Clack (MacClenny, Fla.) and Scottie Kay Auton (Gaffney, S.C.) recorded six kills each.  

Jenna Martin (Alexandria, Ky.) and Krislyn Moore (Spartanburg, S.C.) dished out 21 and 26 assists respectively.  Aubrey Crosby (Spartanburg, S.C.) continued to lead the Valkyrie defense picking up 30 digs.  Butler and Martin tallied 16 and 12 digs respectively.

The Valkyries dominated set one from the start jumping out to a 9-3 lead behind three kills from Butler and two from Clack.  A kill by Butler late in the first set gave the Valkyries a 20-12 lead.  Three Lion miscues and kills by Auton and Martin gave the Valkyries a 1-0 set lead.

In set two, Converse cut things to 11-10 with a kill by Haynes.  Emmanuel rattled off five straight points to take a 16-10.  A kill by Butler made it 17-12 EC, but that was the closest the Valkyries got dropping the set 25-15.

Once again, Converse battled in the early stages of set three but couldn't find the groove falling behind in the middle of the set after leading 10-9.  The Valkyries would go on a a run cutting things to 22-18 but Emmanuel would finish the set 25-19.

Late in set four, Converse trailed 22-20 but a service ace by Moore and a kill by English tied things at 22-all.  A kill by SKA and a rejection by Clack gave the Valkyries a 27-25 win sending it to a decisive fifth set.

Converse spread the ball around in set five getting kills from McCraw, Martin, Haynes and Julianne Carwile (Anderson, S.C.) to take a 8-6 lead into the break.  Emmanuel would take advantage of some miscues to take the lead for good.  Back-to-back kills by Emmanuel finished off the set giving the Lions the 15-12 victory.

Converse returns to action takes the week off before hosting Conference Carolinas foe Mount Olive.  First serve is slated for 7pm.
