SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse College soccer team was upended by visiting Chowan University on Thursday afternoon at Fulp Field. The Hawks were able to post a score in each period to secure their first Conference Carolinas win on the season.
Scores: Chowan 2, Converse 0 Records: Chowan (1-6-2, 1-3-2 CC), Converse (0-9, 0-6 CC)
Location: Hayden Abney Fulp Field, Spartanburg, S.C.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The majority of the first half was uneventful as neither team was able to establish any kind of offense. Converse began to put a bit of pressure on the Hawks' defense but a pair of shots early on by A.C. Albritton and Stephanie Cumez-Ortiz sailed high and left the game scoreless.
However, Chowan broke through in the 37th minute when Carolina Lucci played a ball left and placed the rock the near post to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead heading into the break.
Once again the half started slow as the defenses held its own. Chowan was able to double its lead in the 66th minute with a Sabrina Henderson goal. The Valkyries defense stepped up in the 70th minute after a misplay by the Valkyries keeper gave CU an indirect free kick just outside of the 6-yard box. However, the Vals covered the endline and blocked the attempt.
Unfortunately, Chowan maintained possession the remainder of the match to finish it off.
Converse will visit Limestone on Saturday, October 12. That match is scheduled to kickoff at 2:30 p.m.
