SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Sophomore attack Sharlize Burgos scored a game-high six goals, but it was not enough as the Converse (5-7, 4-4 CC) lacrosse team dropped a vital Conference Carolinas matchup to visiting Barton (9-4, 6-2 CC) College on Saturday afternoon at Fulp Field.
Barton came out strong, scoring the game's first two goals in less than five minutes. Sharlize Burgos finally got the Valkyries on the board at the 24:47 mark, cutting the deficit in half with an unassisted goal.
However, the Bulldogs pushed out to a 6-1 lead following four unanswered goals before Burgos struck again, this time taking advantage of a free position. Barton tallied the final two goals of the half to head into the locker room leading 8-2.
The Bulldogs collected the first goal of the second half before Flore Samsi out her name in the scoring column with a free position goal, trimming the Barton lead to 9-3 early in the final period. After a Kayli Ashenfelter goal for Barton, Kat Goldfuss and Burgos went back-to-back with scores to bring the score back to the halftime deficit (6), 11-5.
However, Barton registered the game's next five goals to expand to its biggest lead (15-5) with 8:34 remaining in regulation. Converse made a valiant effort at a comeback, netting the contest's final four goals, including three more from Burgos, but it was too little, too late as the Vals fell by the final of 15-9.
The Valkyries will be back in action on Wednesday, April 10, traveling to the lower state to face Columbia (S.C.) in a non-conference matchup. That contest is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
