HOW IT HAPPENED
Both teams struggled to find the basket early in the game, but Sides put the Valkyries in front 2-0 with a layup at the 7:37 mark of the opening quarter. From that point the game became a back-and-forth affair as neither team could push ahead by more than four points.
A pair of free throws by Jackson trimmed the deficit to 14-13 at the end of one action of play.
Winston-Salem started the second quarter with four in a row to push ahead 18-13 before a deep three by Alliee Patillo brought the Purple and Gold to within a single basket (18-16) just over two minutes into the frame.
Hailey Gibson connected on a layup for the Rams, which sparked a 19-8 run over the final seven-plus minutes of the half, giving WSSU a 37-24 lead at the break. Winston-Salem State outscored the Valkyries 23-11 in the quarter to establish the comfortable lead.
Back-to-back layups by Davis opened the third period, trimming the Rams lead to 40-28, but Winston-Salem reeled off six in a row to claim its biggest lead thus far (46-28).
Dominique Hill drained a three to draw the Vals closer (46-31), but WSSU continued to build its lead with shooting from the outside. Davis, who appeared to be the go-to near the basket, connected on yet another layup, bringing Converse to within 51-36. However, the Rams ballooned the lead to 23 points (59-36) with an 8-0 run to cap the third quarter.
The run reached 11-0 to begin the final stanza following a three by Melody Prichard before a layup by the Vals ended the spurt. Unfortunately, it seemed as though every time Converse had an answer, Winston-Salem State provided a spark of its own.
Converse pulled the score to 74-50 after Sides knocked down her third triple of the game, but that was as close as the score would get with WSSU finishing the game on a 10-1 run to make the final margin of victory 84-51.
Converse will open the home portion of its schedule on Saturday, November 16, hosting Wingate in a non-conference showdown. Tipoff for that contest is scheduled for 6 p.m.
