HOW IT HAPPENED
UVA-Wise started the game on a 7-0 run, but a layup by Davis put the Valkyries on the board two minutes into the contest. After that, offense was hard to come by as the Cavaliers took a 9-2 lead into the first media timeout.
That lead ballooned to double-digits (17-2) coming out of the brief hiatus, forcing Converse to stop the clock once more with a timeout. The Valkyries doubled-up UVA-Wise (6-3) the remainder of the opening period to trail 20-8 after one.
Back-to-back layups by the Cavs extended the advantage to its biggest (24-8) with 7:34 to go in the first half. Converse trimmed the deficit to 14 on a trio of occasions, but UVA-Wise ripped off a run of 9-0 to push the Valkyries back on their heels once again.
Alexis McMillian connected on a layup with one minute left on the clock, but a steal and fast break layup by Caitlyn Ross sent the Cavaliers into the locker room leading 40-17.
A three-pointer by Wise's Kalee Johnson gave the Cavs a lead of 49-21, but Ashley Sides knocked down a three of her own to spark seven in a row by the Valkyries to pull within 49-28 with just under seven to play in the third.
However, UVA-Wise outscored the Purple and Gold 15-9 over the final three minutes of the quarter to take a 64-37 lead into the fourth.
Converse was unable to chip into the UVA-Wise lead during the fourth quarter as the Cavaliers outscored the Valkyries 23-16 in the frame, taking an 87-53 win.
The Valkyries return to action on Tuesday, November 12, traveling to Winston Salem, N.C. to face the Rams of Winston Salem State. Tipoff for that contest is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
