Converse Falls Twice to Erskine

DUNCAN, S.C. – The Converse (6-38, 1-13 CC) College softball team dropped a pair of close games to Erskine (27-12, 12-4 CC) on Thursday afternoon at Tyger River Park. Both games came down to the final few innings with the Fleet taking each by the finals of 2-0 and 4-0.

The Valkyries escaped a major jam in the top of the second inning. After forcing a 5-4-3 double play to get two quick outs, the next three batters for the Fleet walked to load the bases. However, a lineout to second base ended the threat and kept the game scoreless.

The game remained tied at 0-0 through the first four innings, but Erskine broke through with a single run in the top of the fifth. A one-out walk came around to score on a defensive blunder by the Valkyries.

Erskine added an extra run in the top of the seventh. Taylor Antley tripled to deep left field before coming home on an RBI groundout by Kelci Brown. The Valkyries put the tying runs on base in the seventh, but were unable to push across anyone, falling by the 2-0 final. Allison Plafcan led the Purple and Gold at the plate with a pair of hits.

Converse looked poised to tack on an early run in game two in the bottom of the second frame. Moriah Gomez led the inning off with a base hit down the left field line before advancing to third following two groundouts. However, a swinging strikeout ended the threat and left the contest deadlocked at 0-0.

Erskine took the lead in the top of the fifth after pushing across two unearned runs on a pair of hits and a questionable defensive miscue by the Valkyries infield. Two more runs in the top of the sixth ballooned the Fleet lead to 4-0 with only six outs remaining for the Vals.

Converse once again brought the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the seventh, loading the bases with one out, but a double play put a stop to the scoring chance and ended the game with Erskine taking the 4-0 win.

Converse will return to the diamond on Saturday, April 13, traveling to nearby Gaffney, S.C. to take on the Saints of Limestone College. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
