Valkyries Drop Conference Match to Barton

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse College (4-17, 1-6 CC) volleyball team was defeated by Barton (10-11, 6-0 CC) on Saturday afternoon inside Hannah Gymnasium. The Bulldogs were able to secure the conference win with set scores of 25-22, 225-11, and 25-20.

Morgan Pearson led the charge offensively for the Purple and Gold, tallying a team-high seven kills, while Elizabeth Yohe collected 11 digs. Jordan Mrkvicka finished the afternoon with seven assists to lead the Valkyries.

Set one was evenly contested as the two teams were tied or traded the lead on 15 separate occasions. With the frame even at 13 each, Barton collected four of the next five points to take a 17-14 advantage late in the opening set. Converse fought back and trimmed the deficit to a single point (23-22), but the Bulldogs took the final two points, earning a 1-0 match lead.

Barton owned the second set, racing out to a quick 9-4 lead. From that point the Bulldogs never looked back, taking a commanding 2-0 match lead with a 25-11 set win.

The third frame mirrored the first with the two teams trading the first 28 points. However, with the score tied at 14-all, BC took four straight points to open up a comfortable 18-14 lead. Converse battled back, closing the deficit to two points (19-17), but that was as close as it would get with Barton closing the set, 25-20, and the match, 3-0.

Kaytlin Elkins led Barton with a game-high 14 kills and 17 digs, while Angelica Acevedo dished out 41 assists in the contest.

Converse will return to action on Tuesday, October 9 as it hosts a tri-match with Lander and Columbia (SC). The Valkyries will face off with Lander at 4:30 pm before facing Columbia (SC) at 6 pm.
