Converse Volleyball Comes Up Short in Day Two of Converse Invite

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Converse College Volleyball Team (2-11) finished up the second and final day of the Converse Invitational Saturday evening. The Valkyries fell to Alabama Huntsville (8-2) in the early game and Mars Hill (6-3) in the nightcap.

GAME ONE: CONVERSE 0, ALA. HUNTSVILLE 3 (25-16, 25-9, 25-16)

The Chargers took an early 11-7 lead in the first game but kills by Morgan Pearson and Jordan Mrkvicka kept the Valkyries in it. However, it wasn't enough to hold off the Chargers who came away with the 25-16 win.

Alabama Huntsville started with the advantage in the second set after scoring nine in a row. Despite attack and service errors by the Chargers, the Valkyries could not overcome the deficit and suffered a 25-9 loss.

Looking to battle back in the third set, the Purple and Gold came out strong matching the Chargers almost point for point. But Alabama Huntsville pushed forward and eventually came out on top with a 25-16 win taking all three games from the Valkyries.

GAME TWO: CONVERSE 0, MARS HILL 3 (25-10, 25-16, 25-16)

Converse faced Mars Hill to close out the final match of the Converse Invite. The Mountain Lions ran away with the early lead and eventually posted a 17-6 advantage. Left with little time to pick up ground, the Vals posted just four more points before Mars Hill took the first set of the match 25-10.

The Purple and Gold came out strong in the second set maintaining the lead for the first 18 points. Despite their efforts, the Mountain Lions pushed ahead and recorded the 25-16 win.

In the final set of the game, Converse took a 3-1 lead with the help of kills by Elizabeth Yohe and Kaylee Owens. The Vals battled hard but came up just short in a 25-16 loss to Mars Hill.

Pearson, who was named to the all-tournament team, recorded 7 kills in the match followed by Elizabeth Yohe with 4.

The Valkyries will return to competition on Tuesday, September 11 as they look to pick up their first home win of the season against North Greenville University at 7:00 p.m.
