Soccer Drops 4-1 Decision to Shaw

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Senior forward Gianna Mancinelli posted her first goal of the season, but it was not enough as the Converse College soccer team dropped a 4-1 non-conference match to visiting Shaw on Thursday evening. The Bears posted one goal in the first half, followed by three in the second to take their second win of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Half

Defense was at a premium during the initial 35 minutes of the first half as each neither team could break away offensively. Darian Bankston did her part to keep the Valkyries in the contest, making a pair of beautiful saves to keep the Bears off the board.

However, Teffie-Ann Browne broke the scoreless tie in the 35th minute with a breakaway goal that was pushed into the upper right corner of the net. Converse was presented a handful of opportunities to knot the contest but was unable to do so and headed to the locker room trailing by the single score.

 Second Half

Shaw wasted no time doubling its lead in the second half as Sophia Munoz put the Bears on top 2-0 with an unassisted goal just over a minute into the period. Converse was finally able to post a score in the 52nd minute following Mancinelli's first score. The Valkyries earned a corner kick and A.C. Albritton delivered a beautiful ball into the box that was hauled in by Mancinelli and blasted into the back of the net.

Unfortunately, Shaw was able to earn that goal back plus one more with back-to-back goals in the 54th and 68th minute, both by Jasa Curry, completing the scoring for the contest.

UP NEXT

Converse will return to Conference Carolinas play on Saturday, October 5, traveling to Tigerville, S.C. to face the Crusaders of North Greenville University. That contest is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
