Marshall Scores Twice, Converse Blanks King For First Conference Win

BRISTOL, TENN. – Cassidy Marshall tallied two goals to help lead the Converse (2-9, 1-6 CC) soccer team to its first Conference Carolinas win of the season, dismantling King (1-10, 1-5 CC) by the final of 5-0 on Tuesday evening at Parks Field.

Melissa Carlyle, Hallie Lycans, and Anna Claire Albritton added one goal each in the victory. Darian Bankston collected her first win in conference after playing all 90 minutes in goal, not allowing a goal.

After a scoreless first 10 minutes, Marshall got the Vals on the board with a beautiful goal off an assist from Lycans. Converse played with the lead and the defense was stellar throughout the first half. Carlyle and Albritton went back-to-back for scores in the 26th and 27th minutes, respectively, to push the lead out to a comfortable margin of 3-0. The Valkyries controlled the remainder of the half and went into the locker room with the same lead.

Marshall started the second half just as she did the first, with a score. Following a foul on the Tornado defense, Marshall set up from about 25 yards out. She put leather on ball and ricocheted it off the keeper and into the back of the net to give CC a 4-0 lead in the 47th minute of play.

Lycans got in on the scoring action at the 88:40 mark as Marshall played the role of the facilitator, sending a cross through the box that allowed Lycans to post her second score of the year.

The Valkyries will be back in action on Friday, October 12, playing host to Southern Wesleyan in a Conference Carolinas match. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Fulp Field.
