Valkyries Drop Conference Tilt to Chowan

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse College (2-4-2, 1-3-1 CC) soccer team dropped a 3-0 decision to visiting Chowan University (4-0-2, 3-0-1) on Wednesday afternoon at Fulp Field.

Chowan held a slim margin in total shots (10-9), while corner kicks were even at three each. Nicole Doolittle paced the Vals with three shots on the afternoon, including two on goal, while Hallie Lycans and Anna Claire Albritton added two shots each. Carolina Lucci was the offense for the Hawks, netting all three scores on four total shots.

Lucci put the Hawks ahead in just the 10th minute as she took the ball and beat two Valkyrie defenders in the box before notching her first score of the afternoon in the lower right corner of the goal.

From that point Converse put a ton of pressure on the Chowan defense, collecting several shots on goal, but could not score the equalizer. Of the five first half shots for CC, three were on goal. However, the two teams headed to the locker room with the score at 1-0 in favor of the visitors.

The start of the second half was much like the end of the first with a lot of defense being played and no offense to be shown for it. Doolittle and Albritton were both poised to tie the contest in the 55th and 67th minutes, respectively, but their strikes were pushed away by the Hawks keeper.

Lucci added an unassisted goal in the 84th minute followed by a goal to round out the hat trick in the 89th minute, leaving the final score 3-0.

Rachel Stalford was tagged with the loss after playing all 90 minutes in goal, making four saves and allowing three goals. Olivia Borer went the distance in the cage for Chowan, not allowing a goal and tallying five saves.

Converse will be back in action on Saturday, September 30 as it plays host to Mount Olive. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
