Valkyries Battle to Scoreless Draw With Coker

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Converse College soccer team battled to a scoreless draw against Coker on Wednesday afternoon at the Coker Athletic Field. The Valkyries are now 0-1-1 on the season while the Cobras run their record to 0-1-1 as well.

Nicole Doolittle led the Purple and Gold with three shots, including two on goal, while Lizzie Melching and Claudia Coffin added two shots each. Of the 16 total shots by Converse, 12 were on goal, but the Valkyries could not push across the winner. Lexi Garcia pitched in a team-high three shots for Coker.

Converse outshot Coker by four (16-12) and both teams were awarded five corner kicks apiece. Each goalie held strong between the pipes, not allowing a single score in 110 minutes of game action. Rachel Stalford started the contest and played the first half, tallying one save and Darian Bankston played the second half and two overtime periods, collecting five saves.

The Valkyries wasted no time putting pressure on the Cobras defense as Hallie Lycans posted a shot on goal just over a minute into the contest, but Coker's keeper pushed the ball away to preserve the tie early. Doolittle had a golden opportunity in the 21st minute but her shot glanced off the crossbar and Coker cleared the ball from danger.

From that point the game was academic as neither offense could put together any runs to knock home a goal.

Converse will be back in action on Saturday, September 9 as they play host to the Lions of Mars Hill University at Hayden Abney Fulp Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
