Burgos Sets School Record for Goals in Valkyries Rout of Montreat

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Sophomore attack Sharlize Burgos scored a career-high and program-best 11 goals to help guide the Converse College (7-8) lacrosse team to a dominating 22-1 win over visiting Montreat College (1-14) on Wednesday afternoon at Hayden Abney Fulp Field.

Burgos came out on fire, scoring four goals in game's first six minutes, while Mercedes Dempsey and Flore Samsi also contributed a goal to give Converse a comfortable 6-0 lead early on. A stellar defense turned the Cavaliers over multiple times and allowed the Valkyries to balloon its lead to 13-0 heading into the halftime intermission.

Burgos finished the first period with seven goals while Samsi added four. Myka Jones was a wall in goal, turning away every shot Montreat tossed at her to preserve the first-half shutout. The Valkyries outshot Montreat by a wide margin of 28-3 during the initial period.

The Valkyries did not let up in the second half, connecting on the first five goals of the half to expand the lead to 18-0. Montreat's Kyndell Esposito finally put the Cavaliers on the board with what appeared to be a pass that ricocheted off a Valkyrie stick and into the net.

However, that did little to stop the momentum Converse had built leading up to that point as the Valkyries connected on the game's final four scores to run the route to 22-1.

Samsi finished the contest with six scores and a team-high three assists, while Daija Krygier added a trio of goals.

The Valkyries will finish the regular season on Saturday, April 20, traveling to face the Trojans of Mount Olive. That contest is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
