Converse Lacrosse Drops Pivotal Game to Southern Wesleyan

CENTRAL, S.C. – The Converse College (6-8, 4-5 CC) lacrosse team was dealt a 13-6 loss at the hands of Southern Wesleyan (5-10, 4-5 CC) on Saturday afternoon. The Warriors built a five-goal lead (8-3) heading into halftime before outscoring Converse 5-3 in the second half to secure the win.

Sharlize Burgos posted two goals to lead the Vals, while four other players added one goal each. Defensively, Burgos caused three turnovers and Myka Jones tallied three groundballs during the contest.

Southern Wesleyan scored the game's first four goals seven minutes in, but Kat Goldfuss put the Valkyries on the board with a free position goal at the 20-minute mark. SWU extended the lead to 6-1 before Burgos notched her first score of the contest. Ciriaca Petitto followed that up with a score of her own to cut the Warrior lead in half (6-3).

However, Southern Wesleyan collected the final two goals of the opening half to take an 8-3 lead into the intermission.

Daija Krygier opened the second half with a free position goal followed by a tally from SWU. Maria Knott then got in on the scoring action at the 27:13 mark to trim the deficit to 9-5. However, Southern Wesleyan outscored Converse 4-1 over the remainder of the game to seal the pivotal Conference Carolinas win.

The Valkyries will return to the field on Wednesday, April 17, facing Montreat College in their final home game of the season. That contest is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
