Lacrosse Rebounds With Dominant Performance Over Point

WEST POINT, Ga. – Sharlize Burgos and Daija Krygier combined for a total of eight goals to help lead the Converse (3-3) lacrosse team to a dominating 15-9 win over Point University (8-4) on Saturday afternoon at West Point Park Field. The Valkyries win each period by three goals each en route to the non-conference victory.

Mercedes Dempsey and Kat Goldfuss added two goals each, while Flore Samsi collected a career-high 15 groundballs in the win. Maria Knott led the defense with three caused turnovers. Myka Jones went the distance in between the pipes for Converse, collecting three saves and picking up her third win of the season.

Burgos put the Valkyries on the board early with back-to-back goals just over eight minutes into the opening session. After a Point goal, Goldfuss notched her first score to push the Purple and Gold ahead 3-1 at the 15:55 mark. However, Point came back with two unanswered scores to knot the game at 3-all.

That would be the last goal of the half for the Skyhawks as Converse went on a 3-0 run to end the period, doubling up PU (6-3) heading into the locker room. Samsi added a score during the run, while Krygier added two of her own.

Burgos continued her stellar game with the second half's first goal two minutes, giving Converse the 7-3 advantage. Point came back once more with a pair of goals to trim the deficit to 7-5, but that would be as close as the game would get as CC ripped off a crucial 5-1 burst over six-plus minutes of game time to go ahead by half a dozen (12-6) with under 10 minutes to play in regulation.

Point pulled to within 12-8, but Amy Allen and Libby Stevens went back-to-back before Dempsey took a pass from Samsi and found the back of the cage to give the Purple and Gold its biggest lead (15-8) in the 59th minute. Point added a late goal, but it was too little, too late as Converse took home the 15-9 win.

The Valkyries will be back in action on Tuesday, March 19, playing host to Emmanuel (Ga.) at Fulp Field in a Conference Carolinas showdown. That contest is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
