Samsi's Hat Trick Leads Vals to Win Over Chowan

MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Converse College lacrosse team evened its 2019 record with a dominant 10-4 win over Chowan University on Saturday afternoon. The Valkyries scored the first four goal of the game and never looked back, picking up their first win of the season.

Sharlize Burgos started the scoring for the Purple and Gold, taking a pass from Flore Samsi and sticking it to the back of the cage just over two minutes into the contest. That lead began to expand after Samsi got in on the scoring party 10 minutes later. Burgos added her second goal of the game with 16:26 left on the clock, while Daija Krygier posted a free position goal in the 24th minute of action.

Chowan's Jasmine Latney put a stop to the run with an assisted goal, but Samsi posted her second score 20 ticks later to send the Vals into the half leading 5-1.

Just as the first period started, so did the second. Converse scored the initial four goals to take a commanding 9-1 lead. Mercedes Dempsey collected the first score of the second half, while Libby Stevens posted back-to-back scores, followed by Samsi's second of the contest.

Chowan tried to make things interesting by scoring three unanswered goal, but Samsi completed her hat-trick with 3:07 remaining on the regulation clock. That would be the last goal scored for either team as Converse sealed the victory.

Converse will return to action on Wednesday, February 20 as it welcomes Roberts Wesleyan to the friendly confines of Hayden Abney Fulp Field. That contest is scheduled to get underway at 4 p.m.
