Lacrosse Falls 16-6 at Catawba

SALISBURY, N.C. – The Converse (1-1) lacrosse team fell 16-6 to Catawba on Thursday evening. After a competitive first half (7-4) the Indians outscored Converse 9-2 in the second half to take the non-conference win.

Catawba took a quick 1-0 lead just 49 seconds into the contest, but Brittini Jones tied the contest at 1-1 at the 27:55 mark, scoring on a man-up goal following a penalty by the Indians. Catawba then went on a 4-0 scoring run over the next 14 minutes of game time to take a comfortable 5-1 lead with under 15 minutes to play before the half.

Maria Knott broke the streak with a free position goal but the Indians came right back with another goal to make the score 6-2. Back-to-back goals by Aubrie Lauderdale and Kat Goldfuss trimmed the deficit to 6-4 before Catawba added a late first half goal to take a 7-4 lead into the break.

The Indians blew the game open with the first eight goals of the second half, taking a commanding 15-4 lead with 8:15 to play. Ashlei Alston scored a goal at the 6:02 mark before Catawba scored its final goal with just over three minutes to play. Goldfuss added her second goal of the contest with 11 ticks left on the clock to bring the final score to 16-6.

Goldfuss led the Purple and Gold with two goals while Alston picked up six groundballs. Sharlize Burgos added four groundballs Caitlyn Johnson (0-2) was tagged with the loss after allowing 16 goals and collecting 10 saves.

Converse will be back in action on Tuesday, February 20 as it travels to Franklin Springs, Ga. to take on Emmanuel. The first draw control is scheduled for 6 p.m.
