Hickey and Gabriele Get it Done for Valkyries

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Valkyries Lacrosse team took on the Storm of Lake Erie College Tuesday the 4th of March. The Valkyries played two players up but the Storm didn't let that stop them. It was a tight battle throughout the entire match, but the Valkyries ultimately took down the Storm in a sudden death over time, defeating Lake Erie College 11-10. Lake Erie is now 0-1 overall while the Valkyries are 2-3 overall.

For the Storm Samantha Gryba, Hana Abu-Kweik, and Emma Miller led the offense with three goals apiece.  Leading the Defense was Ashriel West with three ground balls, while teammate Abu-Kweik led the team in draw controls with five. Lake Erie was 14-14 on their clear attempts.

For the Valkyries Sydney HickeyJordy TaylorElizabeth Gabriele all contributed three goals while teammate Amelia Helm had two. Helm also contributed five ground balls leading the Valkyries in defense. The Valkyries were 13-14 on clear attempts for the afternoon.

The game stayed close the whole time with Converse only leading by two goals at one point. With five minutes left in the second half Emma Miller of Lake Erie scored to tie the game. She came back two minutes later to score again taking the lead 9-8. Junior Sydney Hickey of Converse College rallied back with nine seconds left on the clock and scored, tying the game up 9-9. Her goal would give the Valkyries the momentum shift they would need going into overtime.

During the first overtime, Hickey scored again to give the Valkyries a 10-9 lead. A miss goal by Jordy Taylor would give the shift the Storm needed for a chance to score. With one second left on the overtime clock Emma Miller of Lake Erie scored to send the Valkyries and the Storm into sudden death overtime.

With a minutes and thirty seconds left Freshman Elizabeth Gabrielewould step up for the Valkyries with a goal, assisted by Laura Starkes, sealing the win for Converse, 11-10.

The Valkyries will travel on March 8th  to Raleigh, N.C. to take on Meredith College at 3:00 PM.
