Converse Drops Pivotal Conference Game Versus King

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Sophomor Nigeria Davis (Newberry, S.C.) led the Valkyries with 17 points on the night and finished as the third-highest scorer among all players as the Converse College basketball team dropped a league match-up to King University on Wednesday, February 20.

  • Davis added seven rebounds to her stat line on the night while also going a perfect 3-for-3 from the charity stripe.
  • Freshman Tee Ballard (Lancaster, S.C.) added seven rebounds of her own off the bench.
  • The Valkyries shot nearly 80% from the free-throw line.

HOW IT HAPPENED 

FIRST QUARTER

Both teams battled for offensive production in the early goings of the contest with the Tornado jumping out to the 9-6 lead with under five minutes to go in the opening stanza.  King would outscore the Valkyries by a 5-3 margin leading into the first media timeout of the game as they Tornado held the 14-9 edge at the first stoppage.  Only five more points would be scored throughout the remaining time in the opening quarter, all on the Tornado side of the scoreboard as they held the 19-9 edge after ten minutes.

SECOND QUARTER

Converse would put double digits on the board with 8:29 left to go in the half as they knocked down two free-throws to pull back to a 19-11 deficit.  King would continue to outscore Converse into the next media timeout at 4:32 left in the half as they held a 26-15 lead.  Converse was able to slightly close the gap leading into the halftime break as they pulled back to within ten as the Tornado carried the 32-22 lead into the locker room.

THIRD QUARTER

King would come out and score the first six points of the second half to extend back out to a 16-point lead before the Valkyries were able to put points on the board in the third quarter. Two free-throws and a layup would be all the Valkyries could muster leading into the media timeout as King led 45-26 with 4:52 to play in the third.  Converse would tally eight more points in the third quarter to get the momentum rolling but still trailed the Tornado by a 56-34 margin heading into the fourth quarter.

FOURTH QUARTER

Converse forced multiple early turnovers for the Tornado in the fourth quarter to pull back to within 18 points with under five minutes to play. Converse would be able to close the gap to 17 in the late goings of the game by the Tornado would extend back out to a 19-point lead for the final 69-50 margin.
