Valkyries Furious Comeback Falls Short At NGU

TIGERVILLE, S.C.- The Converse Basketball team attempted to overcome an 18 point fourth quarter deficit to North Greenville in a Conference Carolinas clash on the road Wednesday evening, but ultimately fell 78-72.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

Brianna James missed out on her first career double-double scoring 29 points and a career-high nine rebounds.  James connected on 10-16 from the floor and 7-10 from the charity stripe.

Kassidy Moorhouse finished with 12 points and six rebounds off the bench.  Keocia Walker hauled in eight boards and three steals.

Paige Johnson and Hannah Anderson scored 10 points and nine points respectively.  Johnson tallied three steals.

HOW IT HAPPENED

1st Quarter

Brianna James notched the first basket of the contest for either team with a trey nearly three minutes into the contest.

Brianna James continued to score for the Valkyries scoring all eight points in the quarter for Converse.

The Crusaders opened on a 9-1 run after the Brianna James trey.  James ended the run with another three to cut it to 9-7 with 2:25 to play in the quarter.

NGU pushed their lead to 14-7 before Brianna James went 1-2 from the line to end the scoring.

2nd Quarter

Brianna James continued to be the only one scoring for the Valkyries trailing the Crusaders 14-13 after a 5-0 James run to open the quarter.  James completed a three-point play and knocked down a jumper during the run.

Hannah Anderson became the second Valkyrie to score in the contest hitting two from the charity stripe.

NGU opened their lead to double-figures after a Crusader three midway through the quarter.

Kassidy Moorhouse knocked down a triple to cut the deficit to single digits but NGU answered with a 7-0 run.

Keocia Walker knocked down a pair from the line to send the Valkyries to the locker room trailing 41-28.

3rd Quarter

Hannah Anderson scored the first three points for the Valkyries out of the halftime break going 1-2 from the line and hitting a layup.

Brianna James hit a jumper before NGU used a 5-0 tun to push their lead out to 49-33.

Converse continued to fight the deficit but trailed 62-47 heading into the final stanza.

4th Quarter

Tiffani Riggen's triple and Hannah Anderson's layup cut the deficit to ten, 62-52.

A NGU triple with 4:37 remaining in the contest pushed the Crusader lead to its largest at 73-55.

The Valkyries sparked an 11-0 run over the next 2:13 of the contest to bring the deficit to seven, 73-66.

After a Dominique Hill steal, Brianna James hit a jumper to start the rally.  Hannah Anderson swipped the next possession and pushed the ball up the court to James for another jumper.

Kassidy Moorhouse swiped the next possesion and completed the three-point play with 2:59 to play.

Brianna James converted twice from the stripe before Keocia Walker swiped a pass and hit Paige Johnson in stride for a fastbreak layup.

A NGU free throw ended the run with 1:50 to play.  Brianna James grabbed an offensive board and hit a layup followed by a steal by Paige Johnson.  Johnson connected from the stripe to cut the deficit to 74-70 with 1:17 to play.

NGU put distance between the Valkyries with four free throws.  Ashtin Davis hit a layup with three seconds left as the comeback would fall short.
