Cold Shooting Dooms Valkyries Against Saints

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Converse Basketball team was unable to find their stroke in the 87-45 setback to Limestone in Conference Carolinas play on Wednesday evening.

The Valkyries struggled from the floor shooting 23.9% from the floor and 15% from behind the arc.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

Erin Horne led the Valkyries with eight points.  Brianna James chipped in with seven points while Tiffani Riggen notched six.

Ashtin Davis led Converse on the glass with six rebounds.  Erin Horne grabbed five boards.

HOW IT HAPPENED

1st Quarter

Dominique Hill started the Valkyries' scoring with a jumper just a minute into the contest.  Limestone jumped out to an early 8-2 run.  Paige Johnson knocked down two freebies followed by an Erin Horne layup to cut the deficit to 8-6 with under seven minutes to play.

Limestone would extend their lead to 19-6 after an 11-0 run over a two minute stretch.  Paige Johnson ended the run with a layup.  Brianna James hit a jumper to bring the contest back to single digits.

Brianna James hit a jumper with 2:11 remaining in the quarter for the final basket of the quarter for the Valkyries as Limestone led 28-12 after the first ten minutes of action.

2nd Quarter

Limestone opened the quarter on a 15-2 run midway through the quarter.  Hannah Anderson grabbed an offensive board and the put back for the lone basket during the draught.

With 4:27 on the clock, Erin Horne ended the draught with a layup trailing 43-16.

Converse defense stepped up to limit Limestone to two points the rest of the half.

The Valkyries went into the locker room trailing 45-22.

3rd Quarter

Converse struggled to shot coming out of the locker room scoring seven points in the frame.  Brianna James hit a jumper off the pass from Ashtin Davis to start the scoring.  Keocia Walker added a free throw. 

Tatum Boggs hit a pair from the stripe before Limestone doubled up the Valkyries with a trey, 54-27, with over five minutes to play in the quarter.

The Valkyries went cold for nearly five minutes before Erin Horne broke the ice with a jumper off the pass from Paige Johnson with 1:41 to go in the third.

Converse trailed Limestone 64-29 heading into the final stanza.

4th Quarter

Kassidy Moorhouse knocked down a jumper to start the scoring for the Valkyries in the fourth.  After a pair of Limestone free throws, Tiffani Riggen knocked down back-to-back threes for her only points of the contest.

Shakori Jennings-Shuler was able to complete the three-point play to cut into the Limestone lead, 70-40 with 5:39 to play.

Limestone would push their lead out to 79-41 before Kassidy Moorhouse went 1-2 from the stripe.  Briana Hill connected from long distance for the final basket of the contest for the Valkyries.

The Saints would milk the clock to solidify the 87-45 victory.

The Valkyries host league foe, Mount Olive, on Saturday, February 4 at 2pm.  Admission to the contest is free in hopes of donations as part of the annual Pink/Team MEGO game.  All proceeds will go towards the fight against cancer.
