Valkyries Come Up Short at Limestone

GAFFNEY, S.C. – The Converse College (6-40, 1-15 CC) softball team fell twice to Limestone College (19-21, 7-9 CC) on Saturday afternoon at Babe Ruth Field. The Saints were able to take the Conference Carolinas doubleheader by final scores of 8-0 and 5-4.

GAME ONE: CONVERSE 0, LIMESTONE 8 (5 Innings)

Limestone struck early with three runs in the first on five total hits. That lead ballooned to 8-0 after two runs in the second and fourth and one in the third.

The Valkyries could only manage a pair of hits on the day failing to score a run over the five inning affair. Hailey Spitler and Gabrielle Cuevas tallied the lone hits for the Purple and Gold.

GAME TWO: CONVERSE 4, LIMESTONE 5

Converse had better luck at the plate to start game two, posting the game's initial run in the top of the first inning. Spitler reached on an error by the Saints shortstop before advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt from Marissa Martin. That set up Allison Plafcan's double down the left field line that plated Spitler.

However, Limestone came back in the home half of the first with three runs on two hits, the big blow coming off the bat of Brewington, who homered to right center for two RBIs.

After the Saints extended the lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the second, Converse came right back to knot the contest at 4-4 with a three-spot in the top of the fourth frame. Brooklyn McElrath got the inning started with a double before coming around to score on a throwing error. The most exciting play of the game was Courtney Walls steal of home plate.

Brewington put the Saints back in front in the bottom of the fifth, doubling to left center, scoring Parnell following her one-out triple. Converse could not muster anymore offense over the final two innings and dropped game two by the final of 5-4.

The Valkyries will be back in action tomorrow afternoon, traveling to face the Wolves of Newberry College. Game one is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
