Softball Loses Pair of Games at Carson-Newman

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Converse College softball team was unable to pick up a road win at Carson-Newman on Saturday afternoon. The Valkyries fell twice by the finals of 8-0 and 6-1.

GAME ONE: Carson-Newman 8, Converse 0 (5 Innings)

After both teams went scoreless in the first inning, Carson-Newman broke the game open with four runs in the bottom of the second. The Eagles Rinus came up with the big hit in the frame, a bases-loaded triple that plated three runs.

A single run in the third followed by three more in the fourth staked Carson-Newman to an 8-0 lead. Needing a run to stay alive in game one, the Valkyries put the first two batters on base as Destiny Heard and Courtney Walls led off with back-to-back singles. Unfortunately, the two runners were left stranded and the Vals dropped game one in five innings.

GAME TWO: Brenau 6, Converse 1

Game two started much like the first as both teams went scoreless over the initial two innings of play. However, Carson-Newman put up a three-spot in the home half of the third to take the advantage early in the nightcap.

The Eagles added two more runs on the fourth. After the first two batters were retired with relative ease, a hit batter followed by a two-run homerun gave C-N a 5-0 lead after four. That lead was extended to 6-0 following a solo homerun to lead off the Eagles' sixth inning.

Converse finally broke through with a run in the top of the seventh. Heard led the frame off reaching on a throwing error and Moriah Gomez was hit by a pitch, putting runners on first and second with no out. After an out, Gabrielle Cuevas singled through the left side to score the line run for the Valkyries.

Converse will return to the action tomorrow afternoon, traveling to face the Pioneers of Tusculum College. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 12 p.m.
