Converse Softball Loses Tough DH To Erskine

DUNCAN, S.C. - The Converse Softball dropped a pair of Conference Carolinas contests against Erskine on Tuesday night, 4-1 and 5-3.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORES

Anna Bennett and Brett Harvey led the Valkyries with three hits at the plate each.  Harvey recorded an RBI in the nightcap.

Tristan Harvey recorded two hits in the doubleheader with a RBI.

Kaybriana Spalding took the hard fought loss in the nightcap allowing five runs (two earned) in the complete game.  Marissa Steadman took the loss in game one allowing four runs (two earned).

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game One: Converse 1, Erskine 4

Erskine gained a 2-0 lead in the top of the second putting three hits together to crack the scoreless contest.

With two outs in the top of the third, the Valkyries allowed two more runs to score on a fielding miscue to push out to a 4-0 advantage.

Kayla Gilfillan started a rally for the Valkyries in the bottom of the fifth inning.  Gilfillan reached on a fielding error and moved to second on a wild pitch.  Marissa Steadman moved Gilfillan up to third on a sacrifice bunt.  Hannah Boring would bring Gilfillan around to score on a sacrifice fly to right field.

Tristan Harvey singled down the left field line before an Erskine pitching change.  The Fleet would get out of the inning leading 4-1.

Brett Harvey attempted to start a rally in the bottom of the sixth inning with a single up the middle.  Shelby Bullock pushed the runner to second on a fielding error but was stranded on the bags.

Converse dropped the first game, 4-1.

Game Two: Converse 3, Erskine 5

Both teams picked up a hit in the first inning with Elizabeth Aguilar notching the hit for Converse.

Converse would take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning.  Marissa Steadman started the inning with a base knock to left field.  Elizabeth Aguilar pushed Steadman to second on a groundout.  Steadman moved up 60 feet on a wild pitch before Tristan Harvey singled up the middle for the RBI.

Converse's rally would end on baserunning miscues.

Erskine tied things in the top of the sixth after a lead-off triple.  A sacrifice fly tied things at 1-all.

The Valkyries would regain the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning.  Anna Bennett singled through the left side of the infield to start the rally.  Hannah Boring drew a walk.  Brett Harvey doubled down the left field line to score Bennett from second.

Mckayla Davis would bring around Boring to lead 3-1 advantage heading to the seventh.

After two singles and a walk, the Fleet loaded the bases with no outs.  A sacrifice fly brought the Fleet within one, 3-2.  Converse intentionally walked the next batter to have a force at any base with one out.

Erskine would unload the bases with a single and a Converse fielding error to take the lead 5-3.

The Fleet kept Converse at bay in the seventh to take the 5-3 contest.
