Converse Softball Picks Up First League Win Against LMC

BANNER ELK, N.C. - The Converse Softball team battled to a Conference Carolinas split on Tuesday afternoon on the road against Lees-McRae.  Converse picked up the win 2-1 in the first contest before falling 2-0 in the nightcap.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORES

Elizabeth Aguilar picked up two hits in the doubleheader and two walks.  Aguilar hit her second home run of the season in the first contest.

Anna Bennett also picked up two hits.  Mckayla Davis, Brett Harvey, and Ashton Coker recorded one hit each.

Kaybriana Spalding (2-7) picked up the complete game victory pitching 7.0 innings allowing eight hits and one run.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game One: Converse 2, Lees-McRae 1

Converse started off the contest with walks by Marissa Steadman and Elizabeth Aguilar but a double play ended the rally in the first inning.

Elizabeth Aguilar gave the Valkyries a 1-0 lead with a solo homer in the top of the fourth inning.  Converse had a chance to increase their lead in the inning with two more walks but a strikeout ended the inning.

Kaybriana Spalding kept the Bobcats at bay keeping Lees-McRae off the scoreboard through six innings.

Elizabeth Aguilar started off the top of the sixth by reaching on an error.  Mckayla Davis put down a sacrifice bunt to push Aguilar to second.  Brett Harvey grounded out to short and pushed Aguilar to third, but the overthrow allowed Aguilar to score for the 2-0 lead.

Anna Bennett and Ashton Coker picked up hits in the inning but were stranded on the bags.

LMC posted a rally in the bottom of the seventh inning.  Back-to-back one out hits put runners in scoring position.  After a fielder's choice put runners on the corners, a LMC hit to left scored a run.  The runner from first attempted to score but the relay from left field nailed the runner at the plate to secure the win for the Valkyries.

Game Two: Converse 0, Lees-McRae 2

Elizabeth Aguilar walked with two outs and moved to third on a single by Mckayla Davis but were stranded on a fly out.

Three straight hits for LMC allowed the Bobcats to score the opening run in the bottom of the first inning.  Converse limited the damage throwing out the runner attempting to stretch the third hit into a double.

Lees-McRae would extend their lead to 2-0 in the bottom of the third inning with a single through the left side of the infield.

Brett Harvey and Anna Bennett singled in the top of the fourth inning but were stranded.

Both teams failed to make noise in the fifth and sixth innings.

In the final attempt for Converse, Anna Bennett led off the inning with a walk.  A sacrifice bunt pushed Bennett into scoring position but was stranded at second.

Converse takes on Southern Wesleyan in a Conference Carolinas doubleheader on Saturday, March 25 in Central, S.C.  First pitch is scheduled for 1pm.
