Field Hockey Downed by Newberry

NEWBERRY, S.C. – The Converse College (1-14, 1-8 SAC) field hockey team was downed by Newberry (8-9, 3-6 SAC) by the final of 2-0 on Wednesday evening at Setzler Field. The Wolves posted a single score in each period to secure the South Atlantic Conference Carolinas win.

Flore Samsi and Marina Montes-Nino led the Valkyries with four shots each, while Bo Linders added a pair of shots of her own. Newberry held a slim 14-12 margin on total shots and penalty corners were even at 8-8. Brady Keeler led all players with five shots.

Converse put pressure on the Wolves defense early, registering three shots over the game's first 180 seconds. However, it was Newberry that struck first as Farai Kawonde pulled in a rebound off the post in the 13th minute and placed it into the back of the net for the 1-0 advantage.

The remainder of the first half proved to be a stalemate as neither team was able to get anything going offensively, allowing NC to take the one-goal margin into halftime.

Newberry quickly doubled its lead four minutes into the second frame. After several shot attempts that were pushed aside, Chantel Gauthier took a long range shot off a corner and snuck it past the Purple and Gold keeper. The Valkyries looked to narrow the deficit in the 55th minute, but back-to-back shots by Samsi and Montes-Nino were knocked away, leaving the game 2-0 in favor of the Wolves.

That would be the last real threat posed by the Vals as they dropped the contest by the final of 2-0.

Converse will return to the field for its season finale on Friday, November 9, hosting Limestone on Spartan High Field at 5 p.m.
