Strong Second Half Not Enough As Field Hockey Falls to Queens

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Converse (1-11, 1-6 SAC) field hockey fell by the score of 3-1 to Queens (7-3, 5-0 SAC) ON Saturday afternoon at Bessant Field. After allowing three goals in the first half, the Valkyries defense tightened up and held the potent Royals offense scoreless over the final 35 minutes of play.

Marina Montes-Nino led the Vals with two shots, while Cara Burton posted a goal on her only shot of the contest. Ciriaca Petitto and Jacqueline Wadsley split time in the cage, combining for 10 saves on the afternoon.

Queens struck first in the 7th minute of action after Karla Von Ehren collected a missed shot and pushed it past Petitto into the back of the goal. The next 20 minutes of action was uneventful until the Royals ballooned its lead to 3-0 with two goals in as many minutes.

The start of the second half belonged to the Valkyries offense as they spent the majority of the time on the opponent's side of the field. That pressure paid off in the 46th minute after Victoria Bailey found Burton in front of the goal, cutting the deficit to 3-1.

However, from that point the contest was a defensive battle as neither team was able to post anymore scores, allowing Queens to come away with the 3-1 conference win.

The Valkyries will be back in action on Sunday, October 28 as they travel to face Molloy in a non-conference affair. That contest is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
