Valkyries Unable to Pickup Road Win at Limestone

GAFFNEY, S.C. – The Converse College (1-10, 1-5 SAC) field hockey team was dealt a 5-1 defeat at the hands of Limestone (6-3, 3-0 SAC) on Wednesday afternoon at Saints Field. After allowing a single goal in the first, Converse gave scores in the second in the losing effort.

The Valkyries defense was stellar in the first half of action, not allowing a goal over the first 28+ minutes of the contest. However, Mikayla McCleaf was able to collect a ball in front of the goal and push it past the keeper, giving the Saints a 1-0 lead.

Converse had a great chance to score close to the end of the first after Kate Hollamby was one-on-one with the Blue and Gold goalie, but was unable to draw the Vals even, sending the two teams into the halftime with LC leading by one goal.

Limestone ballooned its lead to 3-0 with two quick scores, less than two minutes apart, to start the second half. Converse finally got on the board in the 44th minute of action. Following a penalty corner by Daija Krygier, Bo Linders found Marina Montes-Nino in front of the goal for a much needed score. Limestone was able to earn that goal back plus one more, pushing the lead out to four goals goals (5-1) with less than 20 minutes to play.

From that point both offenses were stagnant and Limestone came away with the 5-1 win. A trio of players led the Valkyries with one shot each.

Converse will be back in action on Saturday, October 13, traveling to the Queen City of Charlotte, N.C. to take on Queens University. That contest has a noon start slated.
