Early Lead Dwindles As Field Hockey Falls to Sewanee

SEWANEE, TENN. – The Converse College (0-4) field hockey team fell to Sewanee (5-1) by the final of 8-2 on Saturday evening at Puett Field. The Tigers scored five first half goals, followed by three more in the second to take home the win.

Sewanee jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 8th minute following a goal by Ceara Caffrey after a penalty corner. However, that lead did not last long as Converse answered the bell with a goal of its own. Taylah Rossington placed a beautiful ball into play, which allowed Cara Burton to find Flore Samsi for her first goal of the season, knotting the contest at 1-1 in the 11th minute.

Maddie Yocklin then gave the Vals their first lead as she collected an unassisted goal with 19:41 off the clock. Yocklin picked up a rebound from a Samsi shot that was blocked and slammed it into the back of the cage.

However, Sewanee scored on four unanswered goals over the next 15-plus minutes to take a commanding 5-2 lead heading into halftime. That momentum carried over into the second half as the Tigers posted three more goals and Converse was unable to cut into the deficit, eventually falling 8-2.

Samsi led the Valkyries with four shots. Jacqueline Wadsley was tagged with the loss after allowing five goals in 35 minutes, while collecting four saves. Ciriaca Petitto minded the goal in the second half and allowed three goals, also recording four saves.

The Valkyries will make the quick turnaround as they take on Rhodes College tomorrow afternoon. That contest is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m. on Puett Field.
